Hello and welcome to a week that is bound to be filled with chocolate easter eggs and fluffy, stuffed toy chickens.
A recent report by The Vulnerable Witnesses and Children Working Group has recommended that children be given tours of family courts, much like the current school tours to the High Court and the Crown Court.
The idea behind the suggestion is to make the Family Court more open and accessible, and offer children an educational experience at the same time. However, unlike the High Court and the Crown Court, most of the matters dealt with in the Family Court directly involve children and are more likely to be personally traumatic for them – especially given that many may well have experienced family courts, either through their parents’ own divorce or even child welfare proceedings.
Our question to you then, is just this: do you think open days for children to various family courts is a good idea?

What is the point? Children in care will never be heard in a family court until they have been in care long enough to have been brainwashed and for Stockholm syndrome to have set in. Gillick competence is so vague it can mean anything the judge wants it to mean, but in practice, if the child wants to go home he/she is judged to be not Gillick, and if he/she wants to stay in care then suddenly, miraculously he becomes Gillick competent.

Hi Mike, funny how so many people are all saying the same thing and sharing the same experiences about the family court but the courts would have you believe that your case is unique and it was judged on it’s own merits, independently!
Might as well have been rubber balls on a conveyer belt, chaotic and like rubber balls keep bouncing back to the courts for justice that never happens!

Rather than tour the family court all children aged 10+ should as Simon Hughes (the responsible minister) implies be able to testify personally in court to make sure that their views are truthfully known and expressed for all in court to see.
