It’s a privilege to be able to write for others but we’re especially fond of our monthly column for Child Quest International, an organisation which locates and reunites missing children with their families. This month we talk about Female Genital Mutilation and male circumcision and why we feel, given all the evidence, there is nothing to distinguish the two so that one can reasonably be viewed as a violent act and the other a health benefit. Not in this day and age.
You can catch the article here, and check out Child Quest’s amazing work, too.

Natasha, thank you. Of course in the UK and across most of the developed world FGM is illegal and MGM legal – why call MGM ‘male circumcision’, and female circumcision ‘FGM’? A telling double standard – but the point is both belong to an ancient past and have no place in modern secular societies. If men voluntarily choose to amputate some very sensitive tissues in their genitals at the age of 18 for religious reasons, so be it. But for the state to condone that mutilation a few days after birth, or even years later, when boys are unable to make an informed choice? Barbaric beyond words. Thanks again for showing some compassion towards boys and male infants.

Readers might like to know, Natasha, that for a number of years now the charity ‘Men’s Aid’ has run a very successful child tracing service for members. The service is available for men and women and has operated not only in the EU but in such regions as Southern Africa, Scandanavia, North America, and the indian sub-continent.
