Image Of The Month: Children In War

16 Friday Feb 2018

Researching Reform offers its blog as a platform to children who are budding artists, as well as adult artists who produce child focused content. This month it gives us great pleasure to introduce this picture by a very talented young woman.

Karam Herbst is 15, and went to schools in Germany and Uzbekistan. Her hobbies are painting, volleyball, football and basketball. She painted this picture for an exhibition at her school entitled, “Children In War.”

Karam is passionate about expressing herself through visual arts, particularly as a way to raise awareness around serious issues. She tells Researching Reform:

“It is very sad that many people who are not directly impacted by war, see children of war only as a number on the news and don’t get the chance to have any emotional connection with them. I really hope my art will one day reach a lot of people in order to raise awareness and to inspire change.”

As children increasingly find themselves caught up in war zones, countries rife with conflict and occupation, this painting is not only timely, but a poignant reminder of how deeply traumatic these events are for children.

We would like to thank Karam enormously for allowing us to share her painting. We hope she will continue to paint, and develop her outstanding gift. A very big thank you also to Karam’s father, Peter.

You can view Karam’s artwork over on her instagram account @annakaramm.

The Untouchables – A Shock Photography Project On Child Exploitation

12 Friday Jun 2015

In what is, to our mind, one of the cleverest and most thought-provoking photographic projects on child exploitation, Cuban photographer Erik Ravelo, and Brazilian artistic director Daniel Ferreira have put together a series of images to highlight child exploitation across the world and to raise awareness about the various attacks against children throughout the world from sexual abuse, shootings in American schools, sex tourism, war, nuclear disaster – even obesity and fast food.

Each image represents a child welfare issue:

The first image relates to pedophilia in the Vatican;

The second image focuses on child sexual abuse prevalent within tourism in Thailand;

The third photo refers to the war in Syria;

The fourth image highlights trafficking of organs on the black market, where most victims are children from poor countries;

The fifth photo relates to the readily available weapons, often for free in the U.S. and;

The sixth image highlights obesity, and the part fast food companies play in aggravating this phenomenon.

We think this project, which was produced in 2013, speaks volumes about the way children are treated around the world. And so we make this our image of the month.

This month’s header image for the Researching Reform blog has been kindly given to us by a group called The Real Victims Voice, and it is a picture of an angel. The group is dedicated to investigating bad practice within the police force and helping victims who have suffered as a result of that bad practice.

We would like to thank the Group for this month’s image, which we think is rather beautiful.

Image Of The Month: Glorious March of Authorities

01 Friday Aug 2014

This month’s featured image is a painting by contemporary artist Albina Kourmirova, entitled “Glorious March of Authorities”. Albina is an accomplished painter who has showcased her work and lectured widely on contemporary art. Albina’s work focuses on the impact the UK family justice system has on families and specifically children, by exploring the themes of power, corruption and compassion within child social care.

Her award-winning work is often raw and compelling and highlights the tensions between established norms which no longer offer children the protection they deserve, and the important work that needs to be done to ensure vulnerable children are cared for properly.

We think this image is rather profound. Faceless, nameless government figures marching over the children they are tasked with protecting as the march, or the ceaseless process, continues unaffected or altered by the impact it has on families inside the system. It is a stark reminder of how bureaucracy and bottom lines can make us numb to the very job we are assigned to do in the first place. That standing by and doing nothing, is as inexcusable as actively causing harm.

Notwithstanding the important message this haunting painting sends out, the artwork itself is stunning, and so this month, Albina’s wryly titled, “Glorious March of Authorities” is our featured image.

Image of The Month: Retronaut

It’s one of our favourite websites on Planet Earth, and their iconic photos of children throughout the ages are always a source of fascination for us.

This month we’ve chosen to feature this gorgeous photo of children playing on an enormous chair. Taken from Retronaut’s excellent archive, the origin of this photo is unknown but dates back to the 1950’s. We especially love the happy dog snuggling in the corner of the sofa and the boys excitedly dangling from the top of the chair.

Retronaut describes itself as a photographic time machine, a digital collection of thousands of searchable photos. We may or may not have spent many hours ogling the massive database of Wonderful…..

It happens to be the image on our Twitter Notifications page, but we loved it so much we wanted to share it with you as our blog’s image for June.

Featuring some of the cutest and most mischievous looking school boys we’ve seen in a while and taken from the truly brilliant V&A Museum of Childhood’s website, we are delighted to feature this vintage photo, which comes from an exhibition currently being held at the Museum called “Are you sitting comfortably?” The exhibition looks at how design inside school and environment affect the learning experience, from Victorian classrooms to outdoor ones sometimes used by teachers today.

Paris Etessami works at The Law Society and paints in her spare time. She has won countless awards for her art and you can see why when you view our Picture of the Month.

Taken from what is now a classic film from the book of the same name, Paris’ exquisite take on this very famous scene from Gone With The Wind conveys the most sacred emotion of all: true love.

It is a fitting image for our site and we are very lucky to be able to host it for the Month of May.

If you’d like to get in touch with Paris, you can contact her at paris.etessami ‘at’ lawsociety.org.uk.

A big thank you to Paris for her permission to showcase her art.

Picture of The Month – MJ Forster

05 Wednesday Feb 2014

This month’s breath-taking banner art has been kindly donated to Researching Reform by highly accomplished landscape artist, Matt Forster.

Matt specialises in Überpainting, works of art which are designed rather than painted. Matt says of the style, “It means literally over, and metaphorically the images are over the top, an essence, an ideal…. The paintings have a very graphic quality.” The level of work entailed means that Matt’s creations can take weeks to achieve.

This beautiful watercolour on paper is entitled “East Anglia” and we think it is perfect for our burgeoning Spring.  If you want to buy it though, it will set you back £8,500 – good art comes at a price, and we feel very honoured to be able to place it on our site.

Matt is currently showing in London all week at the Works on Paper Fair at the Science Museum (one of our favourite museums of all time).

A very big thank you to Matt for allowing us to feature his work; you can follow the lovely MJ Forster on Twitter here.

Picture of the Month – Charlotte Reed

09 Thursday Jan 2014

This month’s gorgeous banner Art comes from author illustrator (and friend) Charlotte Reed.

Charlotte’s story is hugely inspiring.

Having had to leave work due to an injury she sustained there (she developed a chronic case of RSI), she suddenly realised, somewhat reluctantly, that her body wasn’t going to fare well in a conventional work environment. Unsure about where to go from here, she decided to write a book, and draw all the pictures for it, herself.

Why a book?

For several years, Charlotte had been adding “Thoughts of the Day” as her Facebook status. These were her own thoughts and wisdom on the philosophy of life and how to live well, and they went down a storm. So much so, that friends would often say to her that she should really put together all her thoughts and turn them into a book.

And that’s just what she did.

Since publishing her book last year, Charlotte has now sold over 2,000 copies of the fabulous, “May The Thoughts Be With You” and is constantly asked to supply local and chain stationery stores and book shops with her brilliant book. One shop even asked her to turn some of her drawings into greeting cards for them. In fact her drawings have become so popular, that she even offers them in print formats.

So, we asked Charlotte to choose her favourite drawing for us. When we asked her why she chose this particular picture, she told us that it’s been very popular with the kids who come to visit her stall!

When Charlotte isn’t busy giving interviews about her amazing story or drawing and writing away, you can find her at her stall on Portobello Road; she certainly has some amazing stories about the incredible characters who come to visit her there. But don’t take our word for it, you can ask her yourself, either by chatting with her on Twitter or checking out her Facebook page!

A very big thank you to Charlotte for allowing us to use one of her awesome drawings on our site as our picture of the month, which we happen to love – what a fantastic message it delivers; we hope you like it as much as we do.
