Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon formally apologised for the country’s forced adoption practices which took place in the twentieth century, at the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday. She also announced the launch of a new study, with the results to be published in the Summer, offering ways to improve support for people affected by the policy and to help reunite those impacted with their natural family.
The apology was welcomed by survivors and victims of the cruel and more than likely illegal policy, which enabled the state to take children away from their mothers without their consent, by claiming that being unmarried made them unfit to parent.
Wales and Ireland have previously apologised for their forced and illegal adoption policies. In January, Wales’ Deputy Minister for Social Services Julie Morgan made a personal apology to everyone affected by adoption practices in the twentieth century. Ireland’s Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman made an official apology in 2022 to the more than 20,000 people who had been illegally adopted in the country, a practice which involved forced adoption.
However, England’s government has repeatedly refused to apologise for its forced adoption policy within the same time period.
Instead, it has claimed that forced adoption practices in the twentieth century are completely separate to the forced adoption policy in place in Britain today, and that reforms have been made to ensure children are at the heart of every child welfare decision.
Despite this claim, the current system routinely discriminates against parents from ethnic and minority backgrounds or those living under the poverty line, leading to the illegal removal of their children, much in the same way it penalised unmarried pregnant women in the twentieth century.
Sturgeon begins her speech by saying, “The issuing of a formal apology is an action that governments reserve as a response to the worst injustices in our history. Without doubt, the adoption practices that prevailed in this country – for decades, during the twentieth century – fit that description.”
She then goes on to mention several mothers who lost their children, some of whom campaigned for the apology.
“In most cases, their mothers were young or unmarried. They were stigmatised as a result. And they were forced, or coerced, into the adoption process – by charities, churches, health professionals, or social services,” Sturgeon said.
“Some mothers suffered physical mistreatment or abuse. Some were denied appropriate healthcare. Up until the early 1970s, mothers in some cases were given Stilbestrol – a drug that dried up their breast milk, and which is potentially carcinogenic. Virtually all of the mothers were made to feel worthless,” Sturgeon added. “Consistently, mothers were lied to about the adoption process. They were given no information about what was happening. When they did object, they were bullied or ignored.”
This treatment will ring true for many mothers currently going through the child protection system in England, as an estimated 90% of all adoption cases are involuntary, or forced by the UK government, which continues to sanction non-concensual adoption policies.
The speech is worth a read in full.

- Why The British Government Won’t Apologise For Forced Adoption
A ridiculous apology has been made in Scotland for forced adoptions in the 60s and 70s ;
The implication being that adoption problems have now been resolved .
In fact thousands of babies are still being taken at birth every year mostly for risk of future emotional abuse !
So called experts claim to predict the future and the babies are taken from loving families and given to strangers.
All this to enrich the hugely profitable fostering and adoption agencies openly declaring millions of £s profits annually.
Law abiding mums suffer” punishment without crime” because the “professionals” make predictions !
Surely this situation is worse than before ?

How sad Ian, what made you come to this conclusion! Indeed the opposite is happening.
The apology is a NEW beginning in Scotland.
The government recognising that the1948 Human Rights Act
Was NOT adhered to. The apology herald’s in new beginnings,
That being, Mothers and Adoptee’s coming forward,
to be trained in counselling those those present with adoption issues.
Indeed proposal in the pipeline, looking to have the apparatus set up, as part of a University degree In Psychology, Adoption Psychology.
Also, kinship care is truly being consider as the Best option, and Adoption as the last case scenario.
Also the proposal to be put forward that both Mothers/Fathers/ Adoptees being Co-opted onto the Adoption
Review board.
Both Adoptees and Mothers and Fathers, because of this apology.
NOW HAVE A VOICE
In Scotlands future for those separated by adoption.
Also Scotlands looked after children.
Do you think these last 18 years we have sat on our Laurels, indeed the opposite, this apology has come about because Mothers and Adoptees, refused a second rate service.
Insisting in THEIR PARTICIPATION being part of the team formulating the future for all Scotlands separated ,adopted children.

Mara you know quite well that thousands of babies and young children are still being taken every year for adoption or fostering on grounds of mere risk of future harm ! Social workers and judges who pretend they can foretell the future routinely punish parents for acts that they have not yet committed ie punishment without crime !
Police can arrest you if you commit a crime but can they arrest you because they think you might commit a crime next year ! Many friends of mine in France,Spain,Italy, and Switzerland do not believe me when I tell them that in the UK they take children from parents who have not committed any crimes against children because it is thought that they might do so in the future!
Did they foretell brexit,Covid, the channel boat migrants or for that matter the 50/1 winner of the 2022 grand national?
In fact legal child snatching in the UK is a billion£ industry that flourishes at the expense of the defenceless and the unfortunates…………

I guess that means no govt will be looking at modern forced adoptions any time soon. to them its all legal and above board.
More dark times ahead for many innocent families by the looks of it.

No deeper reforms for Adoptees is the big “Apologies” Zerophant in the Adoptee room ..With the wind whistling through it
Once more by Scot Gov and the JCHR weak Inquiry we are made invisible or are expected in the UK to settle for some deregulated counselling rules which Ofsted will announce ..
That is not enough ..One cannot compromise on true identity it must be recognised and given back ..Though some of us Adoptees have taken it’s truth back into ourselves already ..These matters are not over.. Guardianships do not sever identity and break primal bonds like Adoption does .

I think in some cases they do. We were completely cut off from our two children by a very selfish and overpowering special guardian. she even persuaded the judge not to re-establish contact with us and to allow her to change our childrens name to hers. we have had no contact for 8 yrs. i would say thats the same damage Adoption causes.
