A new task force in Northern Ireland has been set up by the The Department of Health to protect social workers inside the country from violence and abuse. The committee will look at ways in which employers can improve the safety of social workers.
The task force was created after a survey revealed that almost nine out of ten social workers said they had been intimidated by service users. The survey, which received 259 responses, was included in a report published by The British Association of Social Workers (NI) in June 2018, called “Insult and Injury: Exploring the impacts of intimidation, threats and violence against social workers”. Over half of social workers (51%) who took the survey held positions in Children and Family Services.
The creation of the task force was revealed at the end of last month, by Chief Social Work Officer for Northern Ireland, Sean Holland, during a conference held by the British Association of Social Workers UK. We reached out to Sean for comment, but have not yet received a response.
Despite being instrumental in organising this task force, the Chief Social Work Officer has chosen not to make a loud noise about the development on his Twitter account, choosing only to retweet a radio interview which was aired at the start of the week on U 105.8FM with the National Director of the BASW NI, Carolyn Ewart, who discusses the task force. The decision not to push the campaign on his Twitter account could stem from a concern that service users, who feel they are routinely targeted and abused by social workers, may react angrily to the news.
The report suggests that three-quarters of social workers in Northern Ireland have received threats and half have been subjected to physical violence. Social workers also claim that service users are abusing the complaints process as a way of intimidating them, which they say is undermining their confidence to carry out their jobs successfully. Other intimidation tactics described by social workers included:
- Behaviour intended to make them worried or afraid, despite no explicit threat being made against them;
- Subtle attempts to discredit social workers, verbal abuse on occasion with racist undertones, swearing, name calling, and threats to cause harm;
- Using social media to post false and malicious information about social workers and;
- The recording of visits to service users’ homes, which respondents claim caused significant stress and anxiety.
The report features several quotes by social workers describing their day to day experiences while carrying out their jobs. A Residential Childcare Social Worker told the authors of the report that, “It wasn’t so much being threatened by the young person, it was.. the relentless abuse of myself and my colleagues, on a daily basis, that was difficult to deal with”.
The findings also include information about the types and frequency of threats, with 75% of social workers surveyed saying that they had received threats of violence against them, their family members, colleagues and the organisations that they worked for. A Children’s Services Social Worker offers her experience of this in the report. She says, “On one occasion when trying to remove a child from a house with police, a service user threatened to get his gun and shoot my colleague and me. Fortunately the police removed the weapon”.
The report makes 13 recommendations which include self defence training, the provision of safety alarms or security apps for social workers, reporting procedures, the production of a guide by BASW NI, and an audit of security features within all social work workplaces. There is also a recommendation to allow social workers to be transferred away from cases if they would like to be moved after experiencing abuse.
The report’s findings will upset families going through the child protection system, who feel that social workers have long targeted them for their personal circumstances, treating them poorly and placing personal and professional interests above the interests of the families and children they come into contact with. Complaints processes are often the only way that families can highlight poor or unethical treatment inside the system, though they are often ignored and more likely to be subjected to abuse and vendetta driven decision making after complaining. The use of police to remove children from family homes is also a deeply traumatic experience for children, and parents can react aggressively to these practices.
The use of recording equipment to make a record of meetings has become increasingly widespread, after families began to notice that their explanations and descriptions of events and family histories were being inaccurately quoted by social workers in child welfare reports. It is not a coincidence that recordings have increased as more confirmed cases of social workers fabricating evidence come to light. There is also currently no right for families who feel targeted by their social worker to be transferred to another child welfare professional.
Families going through child protection proceedings have reacted strongly on social media to the creation of the task force. One service user posted:
“What about the threats [social workers] make and the documents parents are forced to sign under duress or without being fully informed of the consequences?”
A mother with several years’ experience of the child protection sector said, “I think if there was some accountability there would be less anger,” while a family law researcher and expert witness took the view that the abuse was a foreseeable result of poor practice.
While violence is never acceptable, and our site does not condone it in any context except for legitimate self defence, research looking into social workers’ experiences of their interactions with service users has to be placed within context, and cannot be fully understood in a standalone survey.
Many thanks to Dana for alerting us to this development.

Though I have no personal experience with the SS (THANK GOD), I am appalled by what I learn of their activities. Their own twisted language is enough to give credence to many of the complaints against them.
One says “On one occasion when trying to remove a child from a house with police, a service user threatened to get his gun and shoot my colleague and me. Fortunately the police removed the weapon”.
‘a SERVICE USER’?? That is like saying that the Jews were ‘using the services’ provided at Auschwitz!
They complain of “The recording of visits to service users’ homes, … ”
(in the ‘service user’s’ OWN HOMES???) As will be said to any who complain of State Surveillance, “If you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to be afraid of”.
You, Natasha, say, “ violence is never acceptable, and our site does not condone it in any context except for legitimate self defence”.
What could be MORE violent than for sadistic, drunk-with-power SS to enlist the aid of conscienceless thug police to use force to remove an innocent child from its home, ignoring protests from child & parents

I had 2 SW’s falsely report that they had been intimidated etc. yet when I told them I had a video recording of the meeting, their report suddenly went missing from the files.
Draw your own conclusions.

There has to be protection for the many wrongly accused by the SS. A video recording of any encounter should be mandatory, perhaps?

Clearly you can see how the system is tooling up to clamp down on Angry parents by preventing them from trying to expose the wrongdoing that so frequently goes on in SS Circles.
if Social workers Lie in case files and Lie on Oath in court then they are also going to Lie about parents threatening them etc.
Very Dark times ahead if this Task force idea spreads to the mainland.

I remember clearly the social worker in court under oath that my friends were intimidating them at the contact centre (a married couple who had given me a lift) the judge questioned them on this ‘how’ did they do this she replied whistling/singing a tune, ‘what tune the Judge demanded’? ‘born in the USA’ she replied getting more and more flustered looking, oh I like a bit of ‘The Boss’ he replied and moved it along it was obviously clutching at straws but he did not bollock them as he should have! Would be funny if it was not so serious’ but I you couldn’t make this stuff up!

in the kangaroo court they claimed i had a can of petrol and a matchstick in a social service building threatening to burn them all. they didn’t provide any evidence, they have cctv cameras in reception but didn’t have any footage, and there was no police report or any evidence of it ever happening, because it didn’t happen.
ss are playing the victim when they are the aggressors.
i don’t know why they get away with lying in court. is it because it’s not a real court? under english law a court without a jury is illegal, which would make all orders of these illegal courts void.

Both the social worker and the parents interests are meant to be taken into account anyway to protect either from risk of harm, once concerns are raised.
If Management knows, then if need be, the social worker should be changed when a parent sends in their concerns in writing.
If parents were informed of their rights, then maybe there would be less abuse in the first place towards social workers (which is common sense) and there are social workers who do bully parents who are not putting the best interests of the child first. How can a parent, parent their child confidently while being so badly treated by ones from the social work profession? who are bad. It also shows said social workers inexperience and incompetence where they are a bully. Food for thought! xx

Sorry I had to laugh reading that. Social workers feel threaten by being recorded? Have I understood that right? Why it would show our violent and aggressive behaviour. Behaviour intended to make them feel threatened despite no threat? Is this reverse psychology? This is exactly how they treat us. I t quite often says in reports about me I was swearing. I swore once..when they had asked me to go in to arrange contact and there were two social workers waiting who I had never seen asking me to go into a meeting…I was fuming and was well aware by them how they twist and lie about everything you say. I had taken my laptop to a meeting their was about 10 of them I asked to record they refused. I became distressed and left.
Seeing as they are stealing the most valuable, important and loved assets in our life our children it should be conducted like a police interview under caution with the right to remain silent. Even police interviews the questions they ask are designed to only get the answer they require.
The police lie as well apparently there was only two…more like 20..three riot vans and a police car. They were going to smash my door in with a battering ram and I noticed my daughter had gone into the hall..it could have killed her. They were obviously getting her without me noticing to open the door, as it was her who did. Absolute liars as well the police and that is with my F.O.I.. Three attempts it took to get that..they kept sending it back saying I hadn’t provided the correct information. I had.
They are worried about social media…good as now we are all educating and supporting one another. We are all having great fun commenting on an article from an Americian newspaper of a woman who shot a social worker dead and then laughed. She is our hero. lol They never speak of the parents who have committed suicide or the children killed in care,
They have put me in prison twice with their lies. They have an injunction. Only problem is the court has posted it on-line naming everyone, even my children? Then I find out the FC is a Met police officer then all the harassment of the police makes sense. There is a lot more going on than I could possibly say here.
I haven’t seen my children for nearly 8 years Then out of the blue in April this year a social worker called me. I told her I’m not allowed to speak to her the injunction states that. She told me would I go in and see her. She even phoned on the morning to check I was going. I even shook the woman’s hand. She told me she would call me in a few days with time etc to meet my daughter. She never did I left her a voice mail text etc. nothing. These people are evil beyond. I called SS last week, one minute she was there, then she wasn’t, typical phone call. I phoned back and said I want to speak to the bitch. They told me to stop swearing. I informed them bitch wasn’t a swear word.
I was then told she was no longer their social worker since 2 days before. I will not rest until I have justice.
I kept thinking it was a personal dislike. The did say at the start it doesn’t have to go to court. I said No you take it the upset they had caused my children who they obtain by making me sign a Sec 20 in front of my so called solicitor giving 7 days notice. I didn’t want to sign it and was unaware that you can removed them immediately. I sacked the solicitor as something didn’t feel right, he still turned up in court at the next hearing. I thought I would get a fair trial.
The only reason Social Workers feel threatened is because we are EXPOSING their CRIMES and the rest of the gravy train.

they should wear bodycams when meeting service users, just as service users should record them. and recorded evidence (weather recorded covertly or not) should be allowed in court.
a bent judge wouldn’t allow my audio recording of an ss meeting. they admitted we have never harmed our children in any way, and said it’s about parenting our children.
there’s no way they could have legally obtained any orders to kidnap any of my children. the police looked into this and found the orders were forgeries, but they were ordered to back off or lose their jobs and pensions, so the criminals got away with forgery kidnap fraud misconduct-in-public-office and human-trafficking, while we have to live out the rest of our lives without a family
