A directory featuring reviews of social workers by service users around the country has just been published. The Good Social Worker is designed to help families and children going through child protection proceedings find caring and committed social workers in their area. The guide is the first of its kind in the UK.
Child rights campaigner Michele Simmons collaborated with Researching Reform to create the new directory, which includes a section for families to search for recommended social workers by location, and a Reviews section for parents and children who want to leave positive feedback about a social worker. The Tributes section allows service users to celebrate retired or deceased social workers, and was added after past service users got in touch with Michele to offer feedback about social workers who had helped them during childhood.
Michele invited families across social media to share positive experiences they had had with social workers, in order to develop a list of professionals that other families could be signposted to, within their areas. Michele received over 200 replies. The Good Social Worker was then created to house that list and encourage other service users to share their feedback. The directory currently features around 30 social workers who have been recommended, sometimes by more than one family. Several social workers who were nominated could not be added to the list, as they had either left social work or were no longer registered with the HCPC.
In May of this year, Researching Reform spoke with Social Work England Chair, Lord Patel, and invited him to consider the use of feedback sites to help inform and improve social work around the country. Historically, feedback sites have not been embraced by the child protection sector, despite a growing demand for such forums.
Service users who would like to submit a review can use the directory’s online form, and will need to include the following information:
- Your full name and email address
- The name of the social worker/s;
- Which area/s of the UK the social worker practices in, including the name of their council;
- The time period you engaged with them, and;
- Feedback about your experience.
All reviews and comments are checked before being published. Service users who want to remain anonymous can send in feedback and also request that their names are not published on the site.
Michele Simmons hopes the new guide will incentivise social care professionals and give families a better understanding of their case workers:
“The Guide offers significant benefits for social workers, parents, children and grandparents. For Social Workers who really try their best to help families, being featured in the directory will be like a badge of honour. For parents and relatives, it will be a place where they can find help and reassurance about whether they have a good social worker on their side. I’m already confident the list will grow.”
Researching Reform’s Natasha Phillips, says the directory acts as a gateway to good practice:
“Finding exceptional professionals in any sector can be difficult, but this becomes incredibly important in a child protection context, where the decisions being made can change a child’s life forever. The directory allows parents to find those people. It also celebrates great social workers, and gives the sector the opportunity to focus on what these professionals are doing right, and to adopt those practices.”

Hi Ian, if you’d had a flick through, or read the post properly, you would see there are quite a few names on there already. No sector is all bad, and this is an effort at sourcing the good. We should all champion that.

Sounds to me more like one whistleblower ready to Spill the beans about her colleagues than a selection of good social workers
The “good ones ” are nearly all new ones who mostly leave when they find out what they have to do…………
I found one or two names in the area section but no real explanation of why they were any better than the others !
You say ” No sector is all bad” but the Gestapo,the Spanish inquisition, ISIS (terrorists),the KGB, sharia courts condemnig women to be stoned to death ??
Well perhaps you can find some redeeming features but I can’t !

Re your last comment, there were/are good people inside all of those groups actively challenging the status quo. We even watch films about them. And we received a lot of responses from many different people, all recorded by us.

its hard to see how this could work when its well known that the actions of Social workers are dictated by team managers and those higher up.
basically they have to do as they are told or they can leave.and as the pay is up to £700 per week they usually stay.

The proof is in the number of nominations we’ve already received. I know it’s easy to dismiss entire groups of people, after a while it becomes habit, but we have to be fair and balanced. There are people who genuinely try for families, and the nominations are proof of that.

I am so glad where you quoted me saying the following and hopefully Natasha can amend it for me.

Then you responded saying this-
i suspect very little to nothing. Most SARs from LAs come redacted with up to 80% of the information blacked out.
DPA get out clauses, what would they do without them!
What I meant to write was-
“d) How many parents who made written formal complaints have requested (Sars) their information on what is held on “Consumer Relation depatment’s records” and what new information did they find”
If parents are not sent them, there is highly likely something to hide so the parents will know this is the area they need to try and work round to find out what it is.

I hope this works but like Ian I am very sceptical, I have met one good social worker, but when push came to shove all she could offer were her best wishes, I assume she was afraid to rock the boat. The general feeling I have about the SW’s I have met is that they enjoy the power the position gives them and that there is very little if any genuine accountability for their actions, they appoint themselves as judge and jury, assume the worst in cases without any evidence and most crucially are prepared to lie to cover up for colleagues mistakes. This latter trait is a knee-jerk reaction which they are prepared to do instantaneously without forethought, which to me is the most damning indictment of this corrupt, out of control, malevolent system.

Well so far on this site there is not one single” thank you” from any identified parent for any identified social worker for their help with any identified child ! Just one example would be more convincing than chit chat !
Surely the secrecy does not seek to hide good deeds by social workers (if indeed there are any) as well as bad ones??

Ian, we will add names wherever we can. I’m not likely to make reviews up, that’s clearly never been my style. And we have all the evidence in emails, with full names and dates, as well as an original list with full details, so in a court of law, all we would need to do is produce the materials. At this point it sounds like you’re just bashing the initiative for the sake of it, and I’m bored now.

I don’t think it’s a case of the ones who have responded, are evidently too terrified…., because i had asked quite publicly and ones responded knowing i had asked publicly. One social worker responded nominating themselves as a good social worker, although their response was short where they responded only with stating ‘me.’
I asked a few times if anyone objected to their details being used and not one person responded stating they had a problem with that. The data was also collected from another post with exactly the same questions asked, except the responses they received was not public and neither was the post. Again, i asked a few times if anyone objected to their details being used and none did. A few more names were given and added to the ones already instead, on who ones believed they had had a good social worker.
I too am on the families side. As you know, i have been on the receiving end of bad practice with social services and i will go as far as to say ‘i know’ i suffered a miscarriage of justice concerning said matters. I also have reason and evidence to believe that forced ‘alleged’ adoptions, i do not believe for one minute the said children have really been adopted. I believe too, my family was not the only one to suffer a miscarriage of justice and i tried to bring about a law named after a person to help other familes (eponymous law) but what i submitted did not get read properly (was admitted as much with reasons given) and more mistakes got made than there was already; finally resulting in me being restricted amongst others. What was/or is public though, is the said Judgement (which although i was not successful in this case) concluded in part how i don’t make accussations for the sake of it. I was just aiming to help families have information leaflets informing them of their rights to help prevent further miscarriage of justice or potentially.
All this said though, i am fair and i am honest and i think it’s important for me i look at all sides to try and understand. If ones have commented they have/or have had a good social worker, i have no reason to not believe them; when mostly over all these years the attention has mostly only been on bad social workers and if a parent has had a bad experience and don’t believe their social worker/s helped them (which admittedly, most of them have been like) then no one has forced their hand to write a postive comment/review on their social worker/s.
It hasn’t been social workers respond (all except one) it has been the families who have had/have social services involvement I am also fortunate that i have been seen as credible by various judges and/or honest with some of the remarks stated about me or from outcomes of some of my Cases (i recently won an appeal) where my oral evidence and the trial bundle was relied on (not family law related) and even in the Cases i have lost, i believe i have been seen as credible (but there lies just one of the problems when we are seen as credible) and to the best of my knowledge i made the most successful post adoption application, but i am unable to go into any particular details on here due to fairly recently been restricted.

Parents want to know what went wrong when they had a bad social worker, with plenty of questions to ask with all the court jargon and it’s natural they will want to see the policies and procedures from the local authority responsible; at some point in time.
It would be interesting to learn from parents a) How many parents asked for an explanation, who was not familiar with the court jargon/was aware of the court jargon. Then, what was the outcome
b) How many asked their local authority for the policies and procedures they relied on prior to losing a child whether that was by long term foster care, kinship, forced ‘alleged’ adoption ect
c) How many asked their local authority for the policies and procedures after their case ended and what was the outcome of them asking
d) How many parents who made written formal complaints have requested (Sars) their information on what is held on childrens social services records and what new information did they find
e) How many parents were told i) They have made a vexatious request asking for said policies and procedures ii) They ‘may have’ made a vexatious request iii) Had the parents been considered to make a vexatious request prior to this or not if either a) or b) had occured iiii) How many parents have been restricted or gagged concerning asking for policies and procedures
Then-
If there is a petition in place to address this (re: policies and procedures) which i believe should be mandatory with the former.

May be you mean well Natasha but I can tell you right now from what I and my beautiful beloved grandchildren have been put through my 4yearold son and my poor doughter diabetic inserlin dependent in Cardiff University doing law digree our life was hard enough were only small family but extremely close my grandchildren were are life priority they gave us life they were are life are my life they were like siblings every day together my home adored with there toys bikes clothes pictures photos there life .my other doughter there mother lost them section 31 don’t agree with section as people deserve a chance with this there is no chance.but she made her choice s and we as a family have paid for her crimes. My point family friends viserblity A neggertive incorrect with out a dout incorrect number 2 I have signed paperwork proveing this sw avoided contact 4munths I never stopped phoneing no returned calls assessment put to court nowing it could be I correct. Human rights for children and myself were totally disregarded appeal I was told to late one week before court solicitor sent recorded delivery week before court explained that to late to be private to court with full assessment completed as the one I received was roughly photo copped this one more detail Cafcass never came to me at alll in court even though I thought toth and nail and had evidence no one agnoleged me like I’m nothing nor my grandchildren I have written to everyone possible no one will give me answers to why things went so wrong and in nowing this walked away from myself left us greveing more than greveing painfully angry that people huw should have help me achieve my grandchildren and my self stay together completely avoided any communication contact explaining what we could do to amend what went wrong in doing this whould have been factual information not fictional that have no substance so in light in a people’s court not a kangaroo court judge whould have told them this is genulisations with no factual information evidence just genulisations with no substance unfortunately I’ve lost my grandchildren 4and 10no llegal aid stuggleing beyond belief to get through each day and night in the most pain I have ever felt in my life trying to explain to my son why there are no children left worrying about my doughter that never brought one days troubble and hopping this won’t effect her health and studying all because some one took it apon there self’s to take this terrible path and one more thing 2sw in my home one says I report is incorrect other saying if I written it you said it with no decusion walked out of my home like I’m and children are nothing I blame management of there team she signed this off them children we will not see again I really don’t understand that as we’re no problem or threat and my grandchildren love us with out dout and I put my life on it they will be greveing for us why whould any human being do this my greveing I must deal with but torture for my grandchildren worry I have as they will want us I no shadow of doubt how is this best interest no this is not ss this is exploitation of humanity children this is abuse without a doubt neglect is when you for 1year ask for drugs test on there mother to be told your a lier and than year later crak so and be told failed assessment you. Thank you for your post, and I’m genuinely sorry that you’ve been through all that you have with your family. You are new to our site, so you may not be aware that we have been campaigning for change for ten years, and very aware of all the problems. Our project is first and foremost for families and ensuring that children are not removed from parents where it is unnecessary, which in our experience, is most of the time. In other words, we believe that most families can be kept together with the right support.
Not everyone inside a system is bad. There are always a few good men, and women, who fight against conventional wisdom and try to change the status quo. The social workers in the directory, are those people.

The directory has a drop down menu which lets people search for social workers by area. I grew up in out system from age of 6 bad a good experience but I’m not going into that but I will never forget the woman in my life huw I edmired respected and never had a chance to tell her she helped me become what I achieved she was kind catering no one’s fool and went out of her way to look after me adivese me give me goals she stayed in out of my life until around 24 I don’t really no what happened then but she was my social worker lidea miles Cardiff think she was Malaysian or something like that she was decent onist careing wonderful person. For me to say this goes against the grain what they have done to my beloved grandchildren but there is one name one family. But this’s was over 24years ago ss was used for exactly that helping family s but not no it should be called stealing lieying destroyer of inersunt children and family s

it is a Violation of human rights but the govt have done nothing about it. that tells you how much the higher educated care about the lower classes and the disgraceful maltreatment they are subjected to by the system. Zero. thats how much they care.

i totally understand your frustrations. thousands of parents have gone through this and thousands more right now. the problem is the System is rigged against the people and nobody in Govt seems to be doing anything about it.
So where does this leave grieving parents. well pretty much on their own other than sites like this and many on Facebook. all complaining of the same injustice but never really getting anywhere.
Campaign groups mean well but you could say its like sending in the Bunny Rabbits to challenge the corruption when whats really needed is to send in the Blood hounds to tare them apart. then you’ll see change happen very quickly.

I have been investigating children’s Services over a long period. I uncovered many,many cases of blatant fraud and corruption throughout the UK. I have exposed some names on social media,I also tried to get the serious crimes agency involved. All my good intentions really have drawn a blank where ever I try to get directors higher mangers arrested. My last attempt I found a council family court lawyer as being completely fake, no law qualifications what’s so ever. But here the bit that really gets me he’s involved running with very close friends a large adoption and fostering company. Put the icing on the cake works as a lawyer for a said local authority council but also trades his adoption fostering company with the same council. Corruption and fraud is so bedded in with local authorities its going to take a magnitude of good people to bring this to a stop.

Alan its great to have brave people like you trying to expose serious fraud and corruption. the problem is they have strong legal teams to protect them from any attack. they work with Military precision and techniques used by the intelligence agencies such as Mi5 etc. thats why they are so successful in stealing children and evading prosecution. not that different from the Mafia i suppose. if you know the right people and have the money you can get away with pretty much anything.

I uncovered major fraud corruption which is totally linked to children taken by local authority council. It links to a major player large and I mean large fostering adoption mental health, children’s homes, and it looks like boarding schools,as well as land and property. Multi millions of pounds are involved, these companies control what children they want to take. Rogue social workers are small fry compared to these big companies. They use the social worker to catch children into the net. Rogue social workers think they are untouchable and yes I agree with that. Council legal corruption protects them. Any one standing against revealing corruption children stolen or abused in so called care system are legally protected by corruption from the legal departments who contract for local authorities. They hold the purse strings victims hold barely nothing. The blatant bogus SRA registered lawyer has really wound me up. Every detail of this person I have investigated thoroughly over many months. I don’t intend giving up untill I bring him and his growing party to book. Family courts no wonder parents have their children stolen when fakes like this represent the local authorities of many.
