Good to see Bill Kilgallon of the CC speaking out for CC survivors in NZ. He did a backflip a ways back while I had him on calls for a Royal Commission…. Now he’s backflipped on his backflip haha….See following email transcript..
From Bill Kilgallon:
“The Catholic Church in New Zealand’s view is that it is for the Government to decide whether there should be a Royal Commission or similar inquiry into sexual abuse.
If such a Commission or inquiry was established the Church would co-operate fully with it and provide any assistance required.
I will be happy to meet Grant West when he is in New Zealand and I will email him directly.”
My Response today:
“Hi Bill thanks for getting back to me. Okay isn’t that odd given Archbishop John Dew, the Archbishop of Wellington New Zealand, and President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops stated in 2011 he supports the Royal Commission into institutionalised child abuse by priests announced in Australia. He said he would support any similar investigation in New Zealand. See http://cathnews.co.nz/…/nz-bishops-would-support-sex-abuse…/
And you yourself have been in press with:
“Kilgallon said the church had come a long way in the past decade and most victims who had come forward more recently had found the church “helpful and respectful”.
However, after hearing the revelations from Australia’s royal commission into the institutional response to child sexual abuse, Kilgallon said he too would support a royal commission here.
“Is there any reason to think New Zealand wouldn’t have similar issues? I don’t think so. I’m guessing an inquiry in New Zealand across the board at all the institutions looking after children would show up some dreadful experiences.”

So are we to take that now that an ex Kiwi is on the ground collecting signatures for an RC based on the Australian RC model that the Catholic Church has shifted its stance and when it comes to the crunch will not publicly support Grant West’s calls for an RC?
