In an unusual move, US congress has granted UK based Charlie and his parents permanent residence in America so that Charlie can have pioneering treatment for a rare genetic disease he developed when he was only a few months old.
The move could allow the family to bypass UK court decisions and legislation which has, until now, stopped them from travelling abroad for the treatment.

Sounds like a great idea.
if they can get to the USA but the treatment does not work at least they themselves will have the choice to carry on in hope that new treatment comes forward or to end his life.
the UK will have no say in it.
Well done to the US congress for doing this. its called compassion!

I actually disagree with this, mostly because this is giving the parents a false sense of hope. There’s a reason why the courts in the UK can step in and severe parental choice over medical decisions – Jehovah Witnesses are a great example of this, and their refusal to accept blood transfusions – it’s one thing to refuse one for yourself, another to refuse for a child (the rights of the child supercede the rights of the parents, which is at it should be).
All the doctors have said there will be no real chance for Charlie to have a decent life. Even the American doctors said there is up to a 10% change.
The parents, in this case, are incredibly selfish. I know, wanting to make sure your child is healthy and thriving is what all parents want – but he isn’t thriving, he isn’t healthy, he cannot hear/see or even breathe on his own. The only reason he’s still alive is because a machine is breathing for him.

oh well, did that make you feel better “opinionatedbean”.
it is quite rare to have Nasty Negativists come on here to spoil the positive communications of the optimistic Enlightened few.
Thank heavens for those of us who have enough brain cells to at least listen to the great Einstein when he said “Dont believe everything youre told and challenge everything”.
And we will continue to Challenge everything because we know its the right thing to do for the continued progress of our evolution as a species.
Remember the words in the Song, “Wise Men Say only Fools Rush in”.

Dear Dr Manhattan. Thank you for your posts, they’re always appreciated. However, Opinionated Bean’s comment wasn’t nasty, and is perfectly within their right to voice their own opinion. It may not resonate with you, or others, but we must allow everyone to speak their mind as long as they do so civilly, and I personally can’t find fault with the comment’s tone. Thank you.

Natasha i have to disagree with you on this one.
how can the words “The parents, in this case, are incredibly selfish”.
not be seen as Nasty ? these parents are fighting against Forces that want their child dead its that simple. the general theme on this site is that we all believe the parents should have the Right to decide his Fate. when you get people coming on here stating they agree with those who wish for him to die its just not what we want to hear and will be seen as Nasty by many readers. and me voicing my oposition to their opinion is not stopping them speaking their mind. you have just done to me what you told me not to do to them.i dont get your Logic on ticking me off. this is Free speech remember.

Hi Dr M, I still don’t take the view it’s nasty, it’s just a perspective. I know it’s an emotive issue and we’re all feeling for Charlie, and any comment that deviates from a pro life angle may seem unkind, but we have to accommodate others’ thoughts. OB isn’t saying the parents are bad people, just that in their view, they are looking at this from a less than selfless stance. Whilst I make no comment on that view myself, it is a view that some do hold, and without seeing all the evidence ourselves we can’t really judge on a balance, all we can do is choose a position. I have no issue with free speech, I’m picking up on your slightly aggressive reaction to an opinion you don’t agree with. No need to call anyone nasty. Stick to the facts, please.

“Stick to the facts, please.”
not shure what that means but if others are allowed their opposition remarks against Charlies Parents then you Must also Allow my opposition remarks against them. it sounds fare to me.
they said “Selfish”, i said Nasty.
they are both insulting to the relevant people they are aimed at.

My point is that whilst the comment was personal, it was not directed at anyone on the site. So in relation to the discourse here, all I ask of posters is that they communicate without personal malice towards each other.

But thats exactly what “opinionatedbean” has done,
came on here to disagree with all those who support Charlie and his parents knowing full well its going to Anger people when this childs life is on a Cliff Edge.
have you seen what happens when people do that at protests. the police have to stop the campaigners doing them serious harm.
how can you possibly say its fine what they have said but what i have said in defence is not.
this person is projecting Malice to us supporters. no doubt about it.

Well, we are not in a protest, this is a website, and I am happy for people to share their opinions, however uncomfortable they may be for others to hear. Posters in the past have in the main been respectful of that, and I will continue to nurture that attitude. That’s the essence of free speech – stifling other’s views because we don’t agree with them or find them offensive, is not. That’s all I shall say on the matter x

To end off,

its Rocked my understanding of Free speech on this site for shure.
i guess i will have to behave from now on and stop challenging provocation and Malice form others.

Having cured my Asthma, thanks to AMERICAN, Dr Michael Greger, who is an expert in Nutrition. I feel little Charlie Gard has a good chance of recovery in the USA. After all, Science states Breast Milk is best. Yet Great Ormond Street Hospital, denied Charlie this natural nutrition. The mother said, “Charlie’s health went down hill when she could no longer breast feed him!” Yet the doctors ignored this! But then as Doctor Michael Greger states in his video, sadly, most doctors are not EDUCATED IN NUTRITION. And do not know the Science behind it.

About NutritionFacts.org
Whenever there is a new drug or surgical procedure, you can be assured that you or your doctor will probably hear about it because there’s a corporate budget driving its promotion. But what about advances in the field of nutrition? The reason we don’t see ads on TV for broccoli is the same reason groundbreaking research on the power of foods and eating patterns to affect our health and longevity gets lost and buried in the medical literature–there’s no profit motive. It may not make anyone money, but what if our lives would profit?

Sharon i applaud you as everything you said above is Reality. Dr Michael Greger along with Robert Cohen and many others are the reason My partner and i went Vegan in 2012.
Body transformation and physical condition has gone up year on year. i am way more active now than i ever was in my 20s 30s and 40s. i could go on for hours about the positive changes but i wont say anymore than its Amazing how your life changes on a plant based Vegan lifestyle and how you never have to feel guilty about Animals being Murdered to satisfy your stomach.
there is now a lot of research showing Meat and Dairy Carcinogens and Fats as the cause of Cancer, Heart disease, Diabetes, Strokes and the list goes on.
i do believe Charlie would without doubt benefit from this but his parents will do as they think best for him and we have to respect that.
