Welcome to another week.
The Pope of the Catholic Church, has urged the world’s bishops to have a Zero Tolerance policy towards child sexual abuse by clergy. Although Pope Francis has himself been called out for not doing enough on this issue in the past, he has asked for complete commitment from his bishops to prevent abuse happening in the future.
In a letter tackling several child welfare concerns including malnutrition and slave labour, Francis asks that child abuse by priests is acknowledged as a real and genuine concern and calls for a reality check amongst the religious community. You can read Father Francis’ letter here. The letter does not outline ways in which the Catholic Church could prevent abuse in future.
Our question this week, then, is this: what should a Zero Tolerance policy within religious communities look like?
