The Australian Institute of Family Studies has begun to focus on the issues surrounding forced adoption, and as such have a very interesting dedicated page to the phenomenon.
The site tells us that the Institute has looked at a number of areas within forced adoption and separation matters including:
- The history of adoption in Australia
- Effects of closed and forced adoption policies and practices on affected individuals
- Links between adoption and other family separation practices, and their effects
- Current service and support needs of those affected
- Broader service delivery implications.
The site is well worth a visit and offers links to other relevant publications, as well.

Forced adoption should not happen! The children are usually from the care system and they are removed from their homes for their safety. If they are then subsequently adopted without the permission of the child’s parents/extended family how can the authorities be sure that the child really is safe? They can’t! The adoptive parents can do what they like!
I read story after story of the horrific ordeals adopted children endure and whilst some children may go to loving homes that is not a good enough reason to take them and adopt them. Isn’t it ironic that children are taken from their homes on risk but risk is conveniently forgotten when the authorities want to offload the child’s upkeep costs!
Reuters exposed how ill equipped adoptive parents were, despite authorities clearing them to adopt, when some of those re homed their now unwanted adopted children, especially after they succeeded in having their own children or couldn’t cope!
We don’t talk about the breakdowns when adopted children return to the care system from more of the cleared for adoption parents! The checks made are not infailable!
